After years of development, our team at Oval Sound have created a complete system designed to encourage everyone to create, perform and learn music in a very expressive and intuitive way.
Though The Oval has been crafted to be easy to set up and totally intuitive, we recommend you to carefully read this full instruction manual to get the most out of it.
After getting into the basic concepts of the platform, please feel free to play around and explore so you come out with your own creative ways to play.

1.1 ABOUT THE MANUAL
Please note that as a digital music instrument, The Oval and the Oval Synth app, are in constantly under upgrade and evolution, so this instruction manual will always be updated and improved.

2.2.1 STATUS CENTER
- Power The power indicator on means that The Oval is turned on.
- Bluetooth The bluetooth indicator on means that the Ovals bluetooth is ready to connect from the Oval Synth app.
- Charge The charge indicator on means that The Oval is being charged. When the battery is fully charged the charge indicator will turn off.
- Program Mode The program mode indicator indicates that The Oval firmware is being updated. When this indicator is turned on, please leave your Oval in a stable position and do not touch it until the process is finished. When the firmware update process is over, this indicator will turn off.

4. System Requirements
4.1 THE OVAL SYNTH APP
To get the most out of your Oval, please download the Oval Synth app in the corresponding platform for your device.
4.1.1 REQUIREMENTS FOR IOS DEVICES
- iPhone 5 or higher
- iPad Mini 4 or higher
- iPad Air 2
- iPad Pro
The Oval Synth app for Apple devices requires iOS 9.0 or higher.
The following Apple devices have been tested and the Oval Synth app works correctly on them:
4.1.2 REQUIREMENTS FOR ANDROID DEVICES
The Oval Synth app requires a device wich allows connection with third party MIDI devices and Android 6.0 Marshmallow or higher.
4.2 MIDI COMPATIBLE SOFTWARE
The Oval can also be used as a controller with any other MIDI compatible app, device or standalone software, and it can be connected via bluetooth, USB and DIN 5 cable.
5. Set Up
5.1 DOWNLOAD THE OVAL SYNTH APP
5.1.1 DOWNLOAD FOR iOS DEVICES:
Visit the Apple App Store and download the Oval Synth app on your iPhone or iPad.
5.1.2 DOWNLOAD FOR ANDROID DEVICES:
Visit the Google Play and download the Oval Synth app on your smartphone or tablet.
Put The Oval in a stable horizontal position and turn it on by pressing the on / off switch located at the bottom. The power indicator will immediately light up at the status panel.
Please don't press any of the pads while The Oval is turning on and the initializing sequence is happening.
5.3 INITIALIZATION SEQUENCE
The initialization sequence will show you with the LEDs how to rotate The Oval placing the first pad in front of you.
5.4 CONNECT THE OVAL WITH THE OVAL SYNTH APP
5.4.1 CONNECT VIA CABLE
Connect the provided USB cable to the USB port at the bottom of The Oval.
For iOS devices you need an external USB to Lightning adapter (not provided) to plug The Oval to your iPad or iPhone.
For Android devices you need an external USB to Micro USB OTG adapter (not provided) to plug The Oval to your tablet or smartphone.
5.4.2 CONNECT VIA BLUETOOTH
Activate the bluetooth in your device. Then open the Oval Synth app and tap the icon on the right side of the top bar, then select your Oval from the list of available bluetooth devices.
For security reasons, you will be asked for a code to establish the connection with The Oval, please use: "123456".
This security code will be required only the first time that you connect your Oval with a new device via bluetooth.
6. How to Play The Oval
As a new generation digital instrument, The Oval includes a series of multi-gesture performance pads, designed to play with the expressivity of an acoustic instrument.
Combine all of these performing techniques to come up with new creative ways to perform, create and learn music.
7. Use and Maintenance

Taking care of your Oval is a simple and quick operation. It is enough to clean it with soapy water or common detergents to remove most of the stains and dirt that can be deposited on the surface. Gel or abrasive detergents are especially recommended, by rinsing the surface properly.
7.3 HOW TO PREVENT DAMAGE
In general, the surface has good resistance. However, The Oval is designed exclusively for hand pressure/strike, but not for hard objects such as drum sticks. The use of aggressive chemicals such as acetone, trichlorethylene, strong acids or bases is discouraged. Some substances such as inks, cosmetics and paints, on prolonged contact with the material, can release coloring substances on the surface.

9. Firmware Update
Currently there isn't available a newer version of the Oval's firmware to update.
10. The Oval Synth App
The Oval Synth is a music synthesis and effects cross-platform app designed to control with The Oval, with a growing collection of carefully crafted exclusive sounds library, here is where you define what you want to play.
When paired together with The Oval physical controller, the app allows to take full advantage of each subtle gesture, combining the expressiveness of an acoustic instrument with the flexibility of modern digital synthesis.
The Oval Synth app is developed both for iOS and Android devices.
10.1 PLAY MODE
Play Mode is the easiest way to set up and play the Oval for music creation and performing.
10.1.1 INTERFACE OVERVIEW

10.2.1 SELECT INSTRUMENT
- BASE NOTE
To select an instrument, you can navigate through using the arrows, or by tapping over the current active instrument yo go to the dedicated instruments window.
In the instruments window you have the list of all the available instruments on your library. You can search by typing the name of the instrument you want to play, but if you don’t know what you’re looking for, open the tags panel for quick filtering.
10.2.2 TUNE THE INSTRUMENT
Use the tuning panel if you have selected an harmonic instrument. This means it won’t work when you’re playing percussion or another type of instrument.
The instrument tuning depends of the combination of Scale, Base Note and Octave.
Change and navigate through the scales by using the arrows, or tap over the active scale to open the dedicated scales window.
In the scales windows you have a search bar and tags to help you find the perfect scale for each of your creations.
The base note is the central note of The Oval and it will be always the lowest note of the scale. Change it to hear how it affects the sound.
Transpose up or down across a 3-octave range.
The range of the octaves may vary depending on the selected instrument, it can go from a range of -1/1 to -3/3.
Some instruments by default have applied effects, but you can turn them off or change its parameters.
To turn on an effect, tap and swipe the knob selecting the desired intensity.
To customize the parameters of an effect tap over it, this will open the full effects window.
10.2.4 MAKE A RECORDING
Tap over the red button at the bottom bar to start a recording.
Select a tempo BPM and activate the metronome if you want to be always on time while making a recording.
After stopping the recording, you can make a fast editing before you share your music with the world.
Go to trim, if you want to change the length of the recording.
And fade, helps you make a soft beginning and ending.
To save your recordings, tap on share, and select where do you want to save the audio file.
The share function works with the available apps that you have installed on your device.
